When your breasts become a burden
How breast reduction and breast lift surgery can alleviate symptoms and improve quality of life

Back pain, pressure marks caused by bra straps or skin irritation under the breast: For some women, large or sagging breasts can be a burden in everyday life. Movements become more difficult, sporting activities are avoided and the spine can also be put under constant strain by the extra weight. In such cases, plastic surgery can help to alleviate discomfort and improve the shape of the breasts.
“Many patients come to us because they not only find their breasts aesthetically unsightly, but because they actually cause physical discomfort, “explains Dr Petra Scheffer, Head of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery. “Surgical correction can often lead to significant relief in such cases.”
Breast reduction: Relief for the back and shoulders
Very large breasts can place a considerable strain on the musculoskeletal system. Neck and shoulder pain as well as chronic back pain are among the most common complaints. The spine, in particular, is subjected to increased strain. Pressure marks in the shoulder area or skin irritation in the under-bust crease are also common.
During a breast reduction, excess breast tissue is removed to reduce the volume and thereby also the weight of the breast. This can significantly reduce the strain on the back and shoulders. Many patients report a noticeable sense of relief in their daily lives and during physical activity following the procedure.
During the operation, the breast is simultaneously reshaped. The nipple is repositioned to a higher anatomical position and the remaining tissue is sculpted and tightened to create a harmonious breast shape. The removed tissue is routinely examined to rule out any potential pathological changes.

Breast lift: A new shape for sagging tissue
Breast size isn’t always the main issue. Patients often seek treatment because their breasts have lost their firmness over time. Pregnancy, the natural ageing process or significant weight loss can lead to a reduction in breast volume and leave excess skin behind.
During a breast lift, this excess skin is removed and the breast is reshaped so that it sits higher and firmer. The existing breast tissue is preserved. Here too, the nipple is repositioned to a more anatomically favourable position.
The surgical technique chosen depends on the extent of skin laxity. If there is only a small amount of excess skin, a lift around the areola may be sufficient In cases of more severe sagging, an additional vertical scar along the inframammary fold is required. In more severe cases, a scar may also run along the inframammary fold.
Healing, sensitivity and long-term results
The recovery period is similar for both procedures. For the first six weeks, patients wear a special compression bra 24 hours a day, which stabilises the new shape of the breast and aids healing. Physically strenuous activities and intense exercise should be avoided during this time. Temporary changes in sensitivity may occur, as small skin nerves are severed during the operation. These grow back into the tissue as healing progresses. In most cases, sensation in the breast area returns to normal over time. Furthermore, the ability to breastfeed is usually preserved. In a breast lift, the mammary glands are not altered. In a breast reduction, the connection to the nipple usually remains intact, even if part of the glandular tissue is removed.
The final result develops gradually. Swelling and hardening subside and the tissue softens again. As a rule, the result is fully visible after around four to six months. For many patients, the procedure therefore means not only a change in body shape, but also a noticeable improvement in their well-being.
